China lacks universal healthcare
The AP reported that China is struggling to offer free universal health care and the reporter blamed the problem on the free market.
The real issue is that free rudimentary health care is very easy to provide because it's something you can get today even in America at your local clinic. But if you have a real problem or need surgery, the costs increase no matter what economic model you follow.
The AP author incorrectly presumed that costs increased because the country follows a market economy. The real problem is that people started to have access to care that is actually expensive: dialysis machines or ventilators. There is no way China will be able to afford universal healthcare. Even Europe can't afford it. Ironically, the best model is the one that everyone is trying to dump: the American model. The US currently has the highest survival rate for almost every illness including cancer. If the Democrats have their way, quality will decrease but at least we can be proud of our rudimentary healthcare, just like China.
